Gas Station Rewards Programs: How to Stack Discounts With Your Credit Card
Station loyalty programs offer 3-10 cents per gallon off the pump price. Combined with a 5% gas credit card, you can save 18-25+ cents per gallon on every fill-up. Here is how each program works and the best card to pair with it.

Unbranded Station Advantages
Independent (unbranded) gas stations often price fuel 5-15 cents per gallon below branded stations. They do not have loyalty programs, but you still earn full credit card rewards. Fuel quality at unbranded stations is regulated by the same federal and state standards as branded stations, so there is no quality difference.
The trade-off: branded stations offer loyalty discounts (3-10 cents/gal) that partially offset their higher base price. In many markets, the unbranded base price after subtracting the loyalty discount is roughly the same. But you can still stack credit card rewards on top of the lower unbranded price, often coming out slightly ahead.
Warehouse Club Fuel
Costco, BJ's, and Sam's Club sell fuel at $0.10-$0.30 per gallon below the street average. This price advantage is often larger than any credit card reward or loyalty program discount. But there are MCC considerations:
Costco Gas
The Costco Anywhere Visa earns 5% at Costco gas and 4% at other stations. Most other gas cards earn their standard gas bonus rate at Costco gas (it uses gas MCCs). Costco only accepts Visa credit cards at their stations.
Sam's Club Fuel
The Sam's Club Mastercard earns 5% on gas (first $6,000/year). Sam's Club fuel centers typically use gas MCCs, so most gas rewards cards should earn their bonus rate. Accepts Visa, Mastercard, and Sam's Club MC.
BJ's Gas
BJ's fuel stations typically use gas MCCs. Most gas rewards cards earn their bonus rate. BJ's accepts all major credit cards at their fuel stations.
Stacking Examples: Loyalty + Credit Card
Total per-gallon savings when combining a station loyalty program with a gas rewards card. Based on $3.50/gal gas and 200 gallons/month.
| Combo | Station Discount | Card Reward | Total/Gal | Annual* |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shell + Citi Custom Cash | 5 cents/gal | 5% ($17.5 cents/gal) | 22.5 cents/gal | $193 |
| BP + BP Rewards Visa | 5 cents/gal | 15 cents/gal | 20 cents/gal | $171 |
| Exxon + PenFed Platinum | 3 cents/gal | ~4.25% (14.9 cents/gal) | 17.9 cents/gal | $153 |
| Costco gas + Costco Visa | 15-25 cents/gal price advantage | 5% | 32-42 cents/gal total savings | $274-$360 |
*Annual savings assume ~857 gallons/year ($200/month at $3.50/gal). Credit card reward calculated on price after station discount. Costco savings include both price advantage and card reward.
What Are Merchant Category Codes?
Every merchant that accepts credit cards is assigned a merchant category code (MCC) by the card networks (Visa, Mastercard, Amex). Your credit card issuer uses this code to determine which bonus category a purchase falls into.
Gas stations typically use MCC 5541 (service station) or 5542 (automated fuel dispenser). When you swipe at a Shell, Exxon, or independent station, the transaction is tagged with one of these codes, and your card applies the gas bonus rate.
Problems arise when a gas purchase happens at a merchant with a non-gas MCC. Supermarkets with gas pumps (Kroger, Safeway) may process fuel under the grocery MCC. Superstores (Walmart) may use a general merchandise MCC. In these cases, your gas card will not apply the gas bonus rate, even though you are buying fuel.
To check: look at your credit card statement after a fill-up. If the merchant name includes the gas station brand and the gas bonus posted, the MCC is correct. If the bonus did not post, the station may be using a non-gas MCC.
